Dental Fillings
Dental fillings are essential for replacing decay that is found in one or more teeth. Fillings are durable and long-lasting, and if you choose a composite filling option, you’ll have something that matches perfectly with the rest of your smile. We here at Destination Dental Care can help with both detection of cavities, as well as the actual filling procedure.
How to determine if you need a Filling
There are several ways that we can determine that you have a cavity. During your bi-annual exams, we will perform both a physical exam as well as series of x-rays. We also use Carivu, which is a camera-like diagnostic tool that can help find cavities that would otherwise go missed. This technology uses transillumination to make the enamel appear transparent, allowing the dentist to see through the tooth showing the development of cavities.
There are several reasons why you might get a cavity:
- You aren’t brushing or flossing properly
- You consume a lot of sugary foods and drinks
- You are more prone to cavities than others
If you need to have a filling the dentist will clean out and remove all the decay from your tooth. Once the decay has been removed, the small hole that has been left behind by decay will be filled with a composite material, preventing any further decay from entering the tooth. The composite material will be hardened with a special light and the tooth will be restored.
Reasons a Filling May Be Recommended to You
If decay is found, one of the only ways to restore the tooth is to remove the decay and place a filling in the hole that has been made. Composite resin fillings, which are tooth-colored, help to restore your smile without the use of metal.
