Dental Cleanings
Dental cleanings are part of a preventative care regimen that focuses on the health and beauty of your smile. Most often, brushing and flossing done at home isn’t enough to remove built-up tartar and plaque that can accumulate on your teeth and on the gum line. If ignored, this buildup can cause issues with gingivitis and even gum disease, as well as cause decay to begin forming on the teeth themselves.
What is a Dental Cleaning?
At Destination Dental Care, our dentists will give you a medical history evaluation. This helps to identify any medications or issues you may have that could affect your treatments. Once we have reviewed your medical history, our friendly hygienists will start the dental cleaning and will check your gums for signs of gingivitis and gum disease as well as use a series of tools and instruments to remove buildup from your teeth. The teeth are then polished to a high shine and flossed so that you leave the office with a magnificent, clean, and a beautiful smile.
A dental exam can sometimes consist of receiving dental x-rays that help us examine teeth surfaces that are not visible, and to detect if you have deep cavities or decay that have formed. Dental x-rays also aid in helping the dentist to detect if there has been bone loss, or to visualize teeth that are below the gum line.
How Often Should Cleanings Be Done?
It is recommended that children and adults have a dental cleaning done once every six months to ensure that your teeth are free of any signs of buildup and gum inflammation. For children this helps to give them a good sense of oral hygiene that they can bring into their adult lives. There are several ways for you to remember your appointments:
- Pre-schedule your dental cleanings so that you never forget to make an appointment
- Mark on your calendar when your next cleaning should be and contact us in advance
- Set up a reminder on your smartphone or device when your cleaning is due
